BCARRD Holds 16th Regional Symposium on RD and E Highlights

           The Bicol Consortium for Agriculture and Resources Research and Development (BCARRD) held its 16th Regional Symposium on Research, Development and Extension (RD and E) Highlights last August 26 at the Bicol University Amphitheater.  The Symposium, held annually, gathers the top researchers from BCARRD member-agencies.

           This year’s Best Paper awardees were:

            Development Category- First place, “Development of Integrated Multi-Crop Processing System (Zero Waste Ginger Processing Technology)” by Engr. Arnulfo P. Malinis of Bicol University; Second place was “Successful Establishment of Makapuno Embryo Culture Laboratories in the Philippines: A Case of an Effective Partnership in the Coconut Industry” by E.P. Rillo, MBB Areza-Ubaldo, O.D. Orense, C.A. Cueto, G.A. Santos, D. Calub, E. Parahinog, E. Nierva, B. Paduano, R.N. Arancon, N.S.J. Bachiller and A. Sanchez of PCA-ARC.  Third place was “Land Use Management Prescriptions for Mt. Isarog Natural Park Buffer Zones” by Dr. Yolanda Castroverde, J.N. Villavicencio, Arthur B. Estrella, C.B. Llesol, Josephine F. Cruz and  Ma. Teresa B. Lirag of CSSAC.

Research Category- First place, “Design, Construction and Performance Testing of a Golden Kuhol Crusher-Grinder” by Engr. Marife L. Pesino of CSSAC; Second place was “Participatory Coastal Resource Assessment in Atulayan Island” by Mr. Raul G. Bradecina, Jener de Quiroz, Kate Mulvaney, Kristine Joy Lapitan, Antonio Gozo, Patricia Candelaria, Hazel Respeto, Emmanuel Asuzano and Hedeliza Asuzano of Partido  State University; Third place was “Direct- Seeded Rice Production in Saline-Prone Area by Dr. Fe. B. Perlas of CSSAC.

          Institutional Researches- First place, “Goa Shopping Mall and Central Terminal Project Feasibility Study” by Mrs. Agnes R. Pesimo of Partido State University; Second place, “Partido State University Registrar’s System (P@RS)” by Mr. Ronnel R. Atole of  Partido State University; and Third place was “          The Socio-Economic Profile of the BU Students SY 2001-2002: A Preliminary Assessment of the Applicability of a Socialized Scheme of Tuition Fees” by Prof. Carlos V. Cortez, Jr. of Bicol University.

          The occasion was graced by Albay Governor Fernando V. Gonzales, Legazpi City Mayor Noel E. Rosal, Dr. Aida R. Librero-the deputy executive director of pCARRD, and Dr. Graciano B. Bañaga Jr.- the vice-president for administration of Bicol University.
