Significant Findings

Remarks

1st – Effect of Decrowning and

       Fertilization at Red Bud

       Stage on the Yield of

       Queen Pineapple

       (Inocencio Q. Obrero)

2nd – On-Farm Research in

        Corn-Based Farming

        Systems in Bicol Region

       (Romulo C. Cambaya,

        Elena B. de los Santos,

        Ph.D. and Emerlina G.

        Bascuña)

3rd – Farm Family Participation

       in Farming Community

      (Elena B. de los Santos,

       PhD. and Emmanuel P.

       Oroyo)

·      Fruit diameter was significantly affected with increase in fertilizer rates. Slight increases were also attributed to decrowning.

·      Noted increase in fruit weight was observed while fruit length and production of suckers were not affected.

·      Fruit sugar was significantly increased with the combined application of urea and muriate of potash.

·      The length of the crown was reduced by one-third and the weight by almost one-half. The effect would assure that harvest conforms with the standards for tops and will improve transport efficiency and reduce waste.

·      Improved profitability due to significant increase in fruit diameter and a noted improvement in weight which can be translated into a better fruit size distribution in favor of big fruits over small ones.

·      The available biomass produced from a corn in a corn-corn cropping system was evaluated as alternative feed supply of animals raised in the farm.

·      Corn tops when harvested properly can augment the feed requirement of the animals particularly small and large ruminants including draft animals raised in the farm.

·      The biomass produced was more than 3.338 tons per hectare, which can provide cash value of more than P 800.00.

·      No yield reduction was observed in detopped corn plants.

·      A marginalized Bicolano farming family spent an average ten years of formal schooling, actively affiliated in various community organizations and earns an average monthly farm income of less than P 10,000 including remittances from children working.

·      Both spouses share equal authority over matters of economic importance. The husbands wields the authority over direct and indirect farm activities and has influence over other decisions concerning family matter

·      Female members involvement was only during the initial stages and post-production operations.

·      Poverty and economic crisis pressured the entire able-bodied members of the household to be involved in the farming activities or to wage labor.

·      Results imply that various factors (traditional, cultural, socio-economic and demographic) hinder the total participation and empowerment of the entire household members in terms of agricultural productivity.
